First soup finished

Well, I can now post the results or at least the first result, there will probably be more.  I will say this soup was quite a challenge for me.  The focal that my partner Keren Von Hoeren sent was a bezel.

I thought resin was the answer.  I've never tried resin before but bravely ordered some.  I thought that fresh flowers would look awesome trapped forever in a frame.  I ordered a resin kit and then, without the bezel present, I got some flowers.  I wanted a couple of colors and then bought a third bunch because there were so many of the first two that I would need to put them in a vase.  Got the flowers home and they were way too big for the bezel.  So, I pulled some petals off and started working.  The flower petals stayed bright pink and purple until the resin fully dried when they somehow became green:(  At least they were 2 different shades of green.  In the end, I made a pretty little necklace with the focal, the clasp and a few silver accent beads from the soup and pink seed pearls from my stash.  I think it may end up as a present for one of my many very young girl friends.  I seem to share many interests (horses, shiny and sparkly things) with the under 8 crowd.

I am going to edit this post since this is part of the soup reveal.  I also made these earrings with the big silver pearls.

The rest of the participants are listed here on Lori's blog.  Lori is the genius behind the Bead Soup Blog Party and a great friend.  Spend a few days looking at the fantastic pieces that were created.

  4. Receiving an empty bezel would have thrown me for a loop also. I love how you rose above the challenge and created a great focal and necklace.

  10. Oh, resin can be so much fun! And you got to try something/work with something new and that's the whole point of the BSBP. I applaud your effort and enthusiasm. I'm not sure if it's been said yet, but I figure I'll offer a tip about resin: it's often best to seal first (with white glue or decoupage medium) anything you're going to encase in resin (this is especially true with paper, but probably also applies to petals) so that it doesn't become distorted. I think that's probably what happened with your petals. However, I think the altered color of the petals turned out really pretty. Great job stepping outside your comfort zone!!

  11. Nice job embracing the challenge of that focal. I just started using resin and have learned the hard way (as you did) that some things need to be pre-sealed before being put in the resin. It's a trial and error thing. Lovely designs.

  12. excellent job Ann rising to the challenge of resin. It gets a tough rap but it's all in the prep work. I definitely think it takes time to find a groove with it. But in any case you've got a darling necklace there - and I'm with you the under 8 crowd know how to have some good fun!

  13. What kind of flowers did you use? I know you wanted a different color, but I really like the outcome! It is so wonderful that you tried a new medium. I think that is what it is all about, meeting new people, using new techniques, and having fun. It is such a pleasure to see your work, I really like the necklace and I love the earrings!!

  14. Congratulations on the pendant. I think she did you a favor in sending a bezel like that because it forced you to try something new and you did it, by golly, you did it! It is still a very nice necklace even with the two shades of green - nothing wrong with that. Great job.

  16. Wow, Ann, I would never have tried a brand new technique, I'm not that brave LOL. I am so impressed with how well it turned out! Your earrings are so elegant :)

  17. I think your focal came out quite beautiful - I know you'd have loved the original colours, but green is a beautiful colour too :) If memory serves me well, in order to preserve the colour under the resin, you need to dry the flowers first (use silica gel, set the flowers in it for a few days - and when they are dried out, they will preserve both the colour and the shape).

  25. Aw man - so sorry that your bezel didn't turn out as you had hoped - but keep at it! Ice Resin is one of my favorite things to play with! I wonder if you had sealed them (with Mod podge or Lisa Pavelkas Medium) if that may have preserved their color? I've used dried rose petals and it worked swimmingly. =) KEEP AT IT!

  26. I love that the flower petals turned green with the resin. BSBP is all about stretching and trying something new. The focal is beautiful as if that's what you intended from the start. Nice work with your soup.

  32. So brave that you tried resin for the first time with your soup! I love how this party gives us all the opportunity to stretch and try new things. That the flower petals turned green might not have been your plan, but they look really nice in the necklace.

  34. Hi Ann, Kudos to you for trying something new. Your necklace is pretty and I am sure one of your young friends will cherish it. I have not done resin yet but I want to. Did you put some sealer on the petals first? If not that might be the problem.

  35. Love the resin focal and I think the pale green looks stunning paired with the pink!
I made a bezel using copper pipe and was too impatient to dry my flowers first. They were from my yard, tiny and only bloom for a short time. They all turned too. I had white and two shades of purple. All blue now. Your green is a much prettier shade. Hope that makes you feel better :D Wonderful soup!!
